the squatter next door
this guy has been sleeping in that unheated, crooked, dilapidated trailer in the vacant lot next to my building since the fall when i moved here. while i had never seen him this well before, i have seen his bike (barely visible, upside-down on the right side of the trailer) come and go, and i've seen him ride it in and out.

i have been expecting him to move since a couple of months ago when that wooden fence you can see in the background was erected (see this older post). given the rampant construction around here and that wall being built it has long been clear that construction is imminent. well, he may have to move soon, since all morning four New York City Sanitation workers were in there with a bobcat, shovels and brooms, removing junk to a city garbage truck parked on the street outside. they also had a flatbed truck, presumably for the boat and/or trailer, although i doubt either of them would survive being hoisted onto a flatbed at this point. i don't know why the city was doing the cleanup and i don't know why they didn't finish the job, but this may be one of the last times our friendly neighborhood squatter can crash in his rent-free bachelor pad. good luck to you buddy, you will be sorely missed when a building sprouts up from this lot totally obscuring my view and sunlight.
